Make sure your card machine is ready for business

With many businesses about to re-open after lockdown it is important to ensure your card machine is ready for transactions. This is particularly important as its likely using cash will still be avoided by many of your customers.

Having not used your card machine for some time, you will need to make sure it’s ready for when you re-open. Imagine the panic if when the first customer tries to pay only then do you realise the machine isn’t working. Disaster!

So, before you start trading, make sure your card machine is ready to take money.

1. START BY CLEANING THE MACHINE.

Of course, you still have to take all reasonable precautions to prevent the spread of COVID-19, and this includes cleaning equipment that will come into contact with customers.

Turn off your card machine and unplug it from the power source.

Clean your card machine with a damp microfiber cloth to clean the keypad, and display. To disinfect the device, use an alcohol based disinfectant and gently clean it to remove dirt, residue or debris.

DO NOT:
• Do not clean the electrical connections.
• Do not spray, pour or coat any liquid, disinfectant or cleaners directly on the card machine.
• Avoid excessive wiping, which might cause damage.
• Do not get moisture into any openings nor use aerosol sprays.

2. FULLY CHARGE THE MACHINE

After cleaning and once completely dry, reconnect it to power and power up. Connect the power supply to your terminal base and set the terminal onto the base, alternatively connect the power to your handset if there is no base. Once you have done this please wait for your terminal to charge for at least 2 hours or until the battery icon shows it is fully charged.

3. CHECK TO ENSURE A PAPER ROLL IS LOADED

My suggestion is load a full unused roll. Hopefully you’re going to be using the machine a lot.

4. UPDATE THE SOFTWARE

In order to update your card machine with the latest software, you will need to run a download manually. When your card machine was in continuous use, it would automatically update to maintain the latest features, performance, and security. However, if your card machine has been unused for a substantial amount of time (e.g., over the lock down period), it will not have had the opportunity to update. This should happen automatically once you have turned it back on having initially disconnected it for cleaning.

5. TEST IT IS WORKING

Once you have completed your software update it is advisable to conduct a test £0.01 transaction to ensure the machine is working properly and running smoothly before reopening.

If you encounter issues with your card machine contact your payment provider who should have their own in house technical support team on hand to support and guide you with payment machine issues.

Having a card machine is pivotal to your business to process card payments. Take the time to make sure it is ready and working.
